God’s provision is a way of Him being present with us. You can’t divorce this from the first way which is perception. It’s only if you have accepted the awareness of God that you can move on to His provision. God’s presence is known to us in His supplying of our needs. We delight ourselves in the abundance of our provision as Isaiah says in Chapter 55 we have turned to the fountain of strength and nourishment and direction and God’s presence is there in supplying our needs.
If we are focused on ourselves and not on God then we will try to supply our needs on our own. And if we try to supply our needs on our own, generally speaking God will let us do that. If we have it under control, why should He step in? Now because of His grace He doesn’t just treat us in that way but in general if we wish to know the presence of God in our lives then we abandon the project of taking care of ourselves.
Yes you work and do what you need to do but the difference is this; you do your best, but you don’t trust your best. You trust the presence of God with you. It is in those circumstances that we actually come to know God acting in our lives.
God’s action by providing for us has a lot of functions but mainly it sets us free from the burden of providing for what we need and we are able to focus on seeking the Kingdom of God. That’s what Jesus is talking about in the context where He says “seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you”. That passage beautifully illustrates the second dimension of God being with us is His provision for us.
Doesn’t mean you get everything you want. Want is one thing, need is another. Very often we don’t know what we need, we know what we want. By trusting in God’s presence with us we are freed from the burden of doing what we want.
I am reminded of Cesar Milan's brilliant work with dogs. Often a dog's misbehavior, their agressiveness, neurosis, their flighty and nervous behavior is due to the fact that they do not understand their proper role. Almost always as a rusult of bad training by the humans the dog feels its job is to be the protector and leader of its pack, rather than a follower. A follower dog is relaxed, obedient and does not do things, go places or take things without permission. Through intense training, the dog learns that it can relax and just be a follower. Occasionally the dog needs to be taken away from its circumstances for more intense training to learn this. When the transformation happens the change in the dog appears somewhat miraculous. The dog has a huge weight off it's shoulders when it realizes its only job is to just be, to just follow. It becomes the happy polite follower it was meant to be.
