Server migration complete!

I have moved the site to a new server and a new database! Please let me know if you find anything that is not working. I should be getting emails if there are any database errors and such.

Complete revamp coming

I've begun work on a complete rebuild of the prayer-journal site from the ground up. New features will include groups and journals to place multiple entries in. I am planning to build in as many features that have been requested as possible and hope to have the new site complete and everyone ported over by October 1, 2009. I may need help with testing, so if you are interested, please email me at

The Second Update Is Now Complete

I'm going much slower than anticipated, but I have now added the ability to delete journal entries. You can do so by clicking the Delete button while viewing entries you created.

The First Update Is Away

I have done my first update this afternoon, which was to extend the Session timeout from 24 minutes to 24 hours. That should help folks writing long posts or even reading long posts from getting bumped out prematurely.

Return of Jon - Again

God is leading me in a big way to do a major update to this site. I am in rather dire financial straits right now and if I were acting in a worldly capacity, I wouldn't even be writing this entry, but I feel the need to step out in faith to serve God who really has blessed this online resource beyond what I thought, and even after my resistance to update it for the past 3 years has to my amazement continued to bless it and bring people here to enter their prayers. God especially, but also you as the user of this application deserve an updated Web 2.0 version of the Online Prayer Journal, and it is my intention to give it to you.

Please pray for me and keep me accountable to this. I began to update the feature list. Please vote on the features you'd like to see. By the end of the day I hope to have sorted through the list as it is now. I am trying to combine duplicate requests and estimate how long each task might take me.

Return of Jon

After more than 2 years with no news updates, I can finally say that an upgrade is in the works. It's been sorely needed for a LONG time and there are going to be a lot of new features, including most of the ones suggested on the features page.

This upgrade will take some time, and I'm committing to work on it at least 1 hour a day. If you enjoy the benefits of the Online Prayer Journal and you feel led to help out with the upgrade, a monetary donation would make things move along more quickly by helping offset the cost of my time. You may click here: Donate or on the link on the home page or prayer home page.

Any amount would be appreciated, however small. I will keep you all appraised of the progress.

I have finally moved the prayer journal web site to a new server. I am sorry for any interruption, but it should now be much more stable. And faster. Please let me know if you have any problems. - Jon Halder

There was an outage of my network 3/8/2004. The prayer journal was down from around 2pm and was brought back up on 3/9/2004 at 10:00 am. Something happened to the line and it was down completely. I apologize for any inconvenience. (It also came to my attention just now that there were problems accessing the site due to my web server delivering the pages for haldernet instead of That problem has been resolved.)

The user subscriptions now come up in the Subscriptions tab on the main screen. I have also added a feature to choose how many rows to view on the tabs, and updated the View Users list to display the names alphabetically instead of by signup date. I also updated some of the forms for entering and adding entries so that when they bring you back to the entry view screen the Next and Previous buttons will still work properly. The only issue is that when you update an entry it moves to the top of the list, so you won't be browsing from the same spot anymore.

God put it on my heart to finish the user subscriptions today, so it now works. The only thing I have left to do with it is to make sure those entries come up on the Subscriptions tab on the Prayer Home Page.

A new feature is being added to subscribe to a user. This feature will allow you to hit subscribe to user on a user's entry and receive updates whenever that user creates or updates theirs or others journal entries. I haven't had the time to finish it yet, so you can subscribe now but it will not actually do anything. I will post another update here when it is finished. Hopefully it will be done by this weekend, but I am extremely busy at work this week.

I just discovered that the search page was broken today so I fixed it. You should be able to search from your prayer home now.

First of all I would like to thank Darlene at the Online Christian Magazine and Cate at the Prayer Journal Workshop for linking to my site. I view this site as a ministry and I really want to give everyone the opportunity to use it.

Next, I wanted to let people know that there have been some problems with the server network connection lately which have caused a whole bunch of outages. This is being looked into and I am hoping the problems will be solved soon. It is on the shoulders of my network provider now and they are looking at the line.

Finally, I am planning to do some updates very soon, but I also have several things on my plate right now including selling my old house. I don't even have it market ready yet which I also need to do very soon.

I haven't had a lot of time lately, but I finally got a chance to do some work on the journal.

I have added a column to the prayer entry lists to show the Last Posted date. The list is now sorted by the new column so the entries that are the most up to date will display at the top. This was done in preparation for creating a new view/feature where you can show all entries you have access to that have been updated since your last login.

Also, I would like to announce that my family is moving. Since I host this web site out of my home, it will experience a small bit of downtime on Saturday December 21st. The site should not be down for more than the day.

The site has finally made it into the Open Directory Project which means that the journal should start appearing in Google after everything gets synchronized in a month or two.

Well, Merry Christmas and happy journalling

I added two new features:
  • In addition to the globe graphic to indicate public journal entries, I have added two new icons to show a private journal entry and a shared (but not public) journal entry . Private entries are entries that only you can view, where shared entries are entries you've given others access to but are not made public.
  • I changed the form slightly so that you can hit 'enter' after entering your username and password in order to log in.

I made several updates to the site yesterday.

  • I changed some wording of buttons and now have folks creating profiles automatically logged in as requested.
  • Subscription emails are no longer triggered for the person posting or editing a journal entry. only those who did not edit or add a post are notified.
  • Next / Previous page buttons were added to the search and userlist page in anticipation of growth. You may also choose the number of rows displayed per page in each of those areas. My thanks goes out to Joao Prado Maia for creating the PHP class that I used to implement this feature.
  • I added the actual journal entry to the bottom of the Add / Edit screens so you could reference it without opening a new window, or posting and then re-editing.

When you use hard line breaks in your post, they will now be seen when viewing the entry. Before it all just ran together into one line unless you used the <br> tag.

I am unveiling a search function that works pretty well so far. It works using phrases right now and understands ANDs and ORs. I will be adding controls to search for all / any words soon. You can do that if you use the booleans but it is not quite intuitive yet.

I have added a How To document to try and explain how everything works. This application is now at the point where I feel that it is pretty usable. I am planning to add a search feature and depending on the traffic and new users the site gets I will be reworking the View Other Journals page and the Manage Journal Families page.

I have finished giving the buttons a consistent look. I have also updated all of the pages to use the same blue and purple titles. On the journal entry listings I have added a globe icon to indicate which entries are public. I will begin working on the help documents this afternoon.

Subscriptions are now completed. You can subscribe to specific journal entries and receive email notification whenever someone adds to or updates the entry. You will automatically be subscribed to your newly created journal entries, but have the option of unsubscribing. My plans for the journal this week are geared to get it ready for public consumption. To do this I am going to add an online help system to teach people what each section of the web site does and how they can use it. I am also going to finish the pages that I have not quite finished.

New web site address

As of 21 June 2002, I have purchased a new domain for this site. You may not be able to access it at the new name yet because it will take a few days for it to filter through to all the systems. This name should be good for everyone by Monday June 24. The new web site address is:

I am also working on some new features including subscriptions to specific posts.

I have created this site because I saw the need in my life to record the things that God has done for me. The ancient Israelites would build monuments or objects at the places God provided for them as rememberences that they could tell their children and grandchildren about. I decided to set about doing this in my own way. I am a web site developer and what better way to glorify God and tell others what He does in my life than putting it on a web site. As I began to think about it more, I realized that other people could benefit in the same way and even be encouraged more by seeing what God is doing in the lives of people they know.

It is my purpose to build an online community here that will praise and lift up God and that we can encourage one another in love as we walk with Christ.
